BRYAN CLAUSON STAYS HOT AT CANYON WINTER CHALLENGE
By Lance Jennings

PEORIA, AZ – JANUARY 31, 2013... After rain washed away the first three rounds of Canyon Speedway Park’s Winter Challenge, Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana stormed to the 30-lap feature win. Last November’s Western World Champion took the lead from Bruce St. James on lap eleven and ran away with the $2,000 USAC Southwest vs. USAC West Coast Sprint Car victory. Clauson was followed by 5-time Arizona Champion Jeremy Sherman, St. James, Richard Vander Weerd, and Mike Martin.

Starting on the pole position, St. James got the jump on Clauson to grab the early lead. Looking to start 2013 with a victory, the radio talk show host set a torrid pace and inched away from the field. By the seventh lap, Clauson stayed in sight of the leader, but was gaining ground as Bruce reached slower traffic. As Bryan stalked St. James for the top spot, an intense nine car battle royal from fifth was underway. Fifteenth starting Charles Davis Jr. and Richard Vander Weerd from twentieth were surging forward as Sherman, Tom Ogle, Josh Pelkey, Andy Reinbold, Rick Ziehl, Jace Vander Weerd, Colby Copeland, and Jon Stanbrough raced in close quarters.

After a St. James miscue two laps later, Clauson took advantage and began to apply heavy pressure. Using a strong power move, Bryan wrestled away the lead as Bruce looked to counter. The USAC National Sprint Car Champion was too strong and began to run away from the field. Two red flags would halt the action; first for a lap sixteen double flip by Jace Vander Weerd and Michael Curtis. Four laps later, third running Robert Ballou bicycled and flipped the Hockett Racing #77 in the first corner. All of the drivers walked away uninjured, but were done for the night. On the following restarts, Clauson fought off St. James’ bid for the lead and raced to the first checkered flag of the campaign.

Piloting Mike Martin’s #16B Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Bryan Clauson won the program’s first 8-lap heat race. Starting on the outside of the front row, the veteran driver served notice to the competition and continued his winning ways at Kevin Montgomery’s 1/3-mile facility.

After starting eighth, “The Shermanator” Jeremy Sherman of Surprise slipped past St. James on lap twenty-one to claim second. Driving Bill Michaels’ #77M Mammoth Sound / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Jeremy raced his own creation to the second heat race victory. The Ford power plant was running strong and Sherman will be a force to be reckoned with during the Winter Challenge.

Phoenix’s Bruce St. James had to settle for third after a solid performance on Wednesday night. Piloting his #7K Woodland Auto Display / Weld Racing Maxim, Bruce scored third in his heat race after starting seventh. St. James could play spoiler during the Winter Challenge and earn a visit to victory circle.

Visalia, California's Richard Vander Weerd earned the night’s “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a fourth place run from twentieth. Driving the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, Richard struggled early in the night and claimed seventh in his heat race. The former USAC West Coast Series Champion made first start at Canyon Speedway Park and is looking for a better things to come.

“The Magic Man” Mike Martin of Yuma came home fifth at the checkered flags and was ready to celebrate. Not only did Clauson score another main event in his team car, Martin raced his #16 Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim to victory in the third heat race. Mike won last October’s Hall of Fame Classic at Canyon and will be in the mix during the Winter Challenge.

The USAC Southwest and West Coast Sprint Cars will return to action this Friday, February 1st at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria. Round #5 of the “Winter Challenge” will also feature IMCA Modifieds, Pure Stocks, and Mini Sprints.
