RYAN BERNAL ADDS BAKERSFIELD TO WIN LIST
by Lance Jennings

BAKERSFIELD, CA – APRIL 28, 2013... Retaking the lead from “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. on lap seventeen, Hollister’s Ryan Bernal led the rest of the way to claim the win at Bakersfield Speedway. The $1,500 victory was Bernal’s fourth USAC West Coast Sprint Car win of the campaign as the group heads to Hanford on May 11th. Richard Vander Weerd, Bud Kaeding, Faria, and Markus Niemela followed Ryan to the checkered flags.

Driving the Keith Ford owned #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, Ryan Bernal led the first thirteen laps before Faria took control. Racing through heavy traffic, Ryan reclaimed the lead a few circuits later and held off all challengers to score the 30-lap win. Earlier in the program, Bernal qualified second overall, ran second in his heat race, and was second in the dash. Currently, the point leader has three heat race victories, one Woodland Auto Display Dash win, one BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, eight top-5 finishes, and 81 feature laps led. With the victory, Ryan holds a 30 point lead over the competition.

Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia had a late surge to claim the runner-up finish at Bakersfield. Piloting the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, Richard was sixth fast in time trials, won the DJ Safety Heat Race #2, and won his second Woodland Auto Display Dash. To date, Vander Weerd is second in the point standings with two feature wins, two Weld Racing Fast Time Awards, two heat race victories, one semi-main win, two BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Awards, seven top-5 finishes, and 59 feature laps led.

Campbell’s Bud Kaeding slipped by Faria in the closing laps to claim third at Bakersfield. Racing Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet, Bud qualified fifth, placed second in his heat race, and ran third in the dash. Currently, the 3-time Oval Nationals Champion is fifth in the point chase with two heat race victories, one Woodland Auto Display Dash win, and five top-5 finishes to his credit.

Driving his #17V Johnston Calf Pens / DeBoer & Sons Trucking Spike, “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. of Tipton took advantage of heavy traffic to claim the lead on lap fourteen. His lead was short lived and as track conditions changed, Danny fell back to fourth at the checkered flag. Earlier, the veteran driver was third fast in time trials, fourth in his heat race, and fourth in the dash. Faria left Bakersfield third in the point chase with two heat race victories, six top-10 finishes, and 4 feature laps led on the season.

Rauma, Finland’s Markus Niemela scored fifth in the 30-lap main event. Piloting the Steve Watt owned #81 Christian Stover Foundation / Lost Reality Clothing Maxim, Niemela qualified eleventh, ran third in his heat race, and was sixth in the dash. Markus is currently sixth in the standings with two heat race victories, one Woodland Auto Display Dash win, four top-5 finishes, and 25 feature laps led.

“The Bakersfield Bullet” Rusty Carlile earned the night’s BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award with a sixth place run after starting fourteenth. Racing his #51 Southwest Contractors / N.T.S. Incorporated Bullet, Carlile was fourteenth quick on the night and eighth in his heat race. To date, the veteran driver is seventh in points with three top-5 finishes and 13 feature laps led on the year.

Dennis Howell of Rancho Palos Verdes earned his first Weld Racing Fast Time Award of the year. Driving the family owned #62 San Pedro Auto Body / Howell-Meyer Racing Maxim, Howell ran seventh in his heat race and scored eighth in the main event. The hard charging driver missed the start of the season and has three top-10 finishes to his credit.

Visalia’s Jace Vander Weerd won the night’s 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Piloting the family owned #88 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, Jace was ninth quick in time trials, fifth in the dash, and sixteenth in the feature after a late race flip. Uninjured, Vander Weerd is fourth in points with two heat race victories, one Woodland Auto Display Dash win, and four top-5 finishes on the season.
