USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series

TROY RUTHERFORD WINS SHOOTOUT AT KINGS SPEEDWAY
by Lance Jennings

HANFORD, CA – JULY 21, 2013... In a wild race where lapped traffic played a key role, Ojai’s Troy Rutherford won the 30-lap feature at Kings Speedway. The $1,500 Hanford victory was the first career USAC West Coast Sprint Car triumph for the former Ventura Sprint Car Champion. “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr., Markus Niemela, Bud Kaeding, and Austin Liggett rounded out the top-five drivers.

As starter Willie Williams waved the green flag, Rutherford grabbed the lead from his outside front row starting spot. With Faria close behind, the veteran drivers began to run away from the field. With nearly half of the race over and nearly a straightaway lead, the pair sliced their way through slower traffic. As Rutherford’s progress was slowed, Faria took advantage and grabbed the lead on lap fifteen. Two laps later, the tables were turned as “Hollywood” avoided near disaster with a slower car. As Faria recovered, Troy regained the lead and powered his way to the checkered flags at the Kings County Fairgrounds.

Racing his #11 Amsoil / Trench Shoring TCR, Troy Rutherford dominated the Hanford main event. Qualifying seventh out of the 16 cars in the pit area, Troy scored fourth in his heat race and was second in the dash after starting fifth. In limited starts, the former SCRA Rookie of the Year has one Weld Racing Fast Time Award, two-top-10 finishes, and 28 feature laps led to his credit.

“Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. of Tipton led two laps of the feature before taking second at Kings Speedway. Piloting his #17V Johnston Calf Pens / DeBoer & Sons Trucking Spike, Faria was sixth quick in time trials, won the DJ Safety Heat Race #2, and won the Woodland Auto Display Dash. With Ryan Bernal and Richard Vander Weerd racing in Indiana, “Hollywood” has taken over the points lead with one Weld Racing Fast Time Award, five heat race victories, two Woodland Auto Display Dash win, one BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, eleven top-10 finishes, and 24 feature laps led.

Rauma, Finland’s Markus Niemela earned his second BR Motorsports / Racing Optics “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a third place run from eleventh. Driving Steve Watt’s #81 Christian Stover Foundation / Lost Reality Maxim, Niemela set the standard in Weld Racing Time Trials, claimed sixth in his heat race, and was not eligible for the dash. To date, Markus is fifth in the standings with two Weld Racing Fast Time Awards, three heat race victories, one Woodland Auto Display Dash win, eight top-10 finishes, and 25 feature laps led on the season.

Scoring fourth in the Kings Speedway 30-lap feature was Bud Kaeding of Campbell. Racing Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet, Bud qualified second overall, scored fourth in his heat race, and ran fourth in the dash. Kaeding left Hanford third in points with two heat race victories, two Woodland Auto Display Dash wins, twelve top-10 finishes, and 7 feature laps led in 2013.

Tracy’s Austin Liggett returned to action with a fresh engine and claimed fifth at the checkered flags. Piloting the family owned #83 Excel Environmental Services / Home Connections Inc. Maxim, Liggett was fourth fast in qualifying, scored fifth in his heat race, and ran fifth in the dash. Last season’s Rookie of the Year is ninth in championship points with one heat race victory and three top-10 finishes in the campaign.

Don Gansen of Verdemont Heights raced to victory in the Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Driving the family owned #7G Trench Shoring / Dynamic Powder Coating Maxim, Gansen qualified ninth and claimed sixth in the dash. Unfortunately, the former California Lightning Sprint Champion scored fourteenth in the main event after an early exit. As this writing goes to press, Don has one BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award and one top-10 finish in limited starts.

On Saturday, August 3rd, the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series will return to Scott Woodhouse’s Kings Speedway in Hanford. The “Jim Evett Memorial” will also showcase IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, Mini Stocks, and Hobby Stocks.
