VANDER WEERD WINS “COTTON CLASSIC” & FARIA WINS USAC WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIP
by Lance Jennings

HANFORD, CA – OCTOBER 13, 2013... After Kyle Hirst suffered mechanical problems, Visalia’s Richard Vander Weerd led the last two laps to score the “28th Annual Cotton Classic” victory. For Vander Weerd, the $1,500 USAC West Coast Sprint Car win at Kings Speedway was his sixth triumph of 2013. This effort ties Peter Murphy’s single season win record and also ties Ryan Bernal as the series win leader with 14 victories. Weld Racing Fast Qualifier Markus Niemela, Hirst, Bud Kaeding, and Matt Mitchell followed Richard to the checkered flags. After finishing eighth in the main event, “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. earned the series championship.

With five official lead changes, the “Cotton Classic” was one of the most hotly contested features of the season. D.J. Netto, who won both the USAC West Coast and King of the West dashes, led the first lap of the “Cotton Classic.” Markus Niemela took command on the next circuit, but had to contend with a surging Kyle Hirst. Niemela and Hirst raced back and forth for the top spot until Kyle secured the lead on lap nine. Hirst, looking for his first USAC West Coast win, was running away from the field. Then, a suspected suspension problem on lap 28 dramatically slowed the leader. From there, Vander Weerd took over and powered to his series leading sixth victory at Hanford.

Piloting the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Richard Vander Weerd closes out the year second in points. The 2011 Champion qualified second out of the 27 cars in attendance, won the night’s DJ Safety Heat Race #2, and claimed fifth in the dash. After adding the “Cotton Classic” to his win list, Vander Weerd leads the series with six feature wins, four Weld Racing Fast Time Awards, two BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Awards (tied), seventeen top-10 finishes, and 120 feature laps led. In addition, Richard has five heat race victories, two Woodland Auto Display Dash wins, and one Competition Suspension Inc. Rod End Supply Semi-Main win.

After leading early in the main event, Markus Niemela of Rauma, Finland slipped by Hirst to finish second at Hanford. Racing Steve Watt’s #81 Christian Stover Foundation / Steve Watt Enterprises Maxim, Niemela earned his third Weld Racing Fast Time Award of the season, placed second in his heat race, and scored second in the dash. Markus finished fourth in the standings with five heat race victories, two Woodland Auto Display Dash wins, two BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Awards, nine top-10 finishes, and 33 feature laps led to his credit.

After dominating the main event, Elk Grove’s Kyle Hirst scored third in the “Cotton Classic” with a wounded car. Making his first start of the year in Dennis Roth’s #51T Roth Enterprises / Revcon Suspension KPC, Hirst was fifth quick in time trials, second in his heat race, and fourth in the dash.

Bud Kaeding of Campbell scored fourth in the season’s point finale at Hanford. Piloting Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet, the 2012 Champion qualified sixth, placed third in his heat race, and scored eighth in the dash after a tangle. Kaeding ends the point season third in the standings with three heat race victories, two Woodland Auto Display Dash wins, sixteen top-10 finishes, and 22 feature laps led.

Yorba Linda’s Matt Mitchell earned the night’s BR Motorsports / Racing Optics “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a fifth place run from fifteenth. Racing Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, the USAC/CRA standout was twenty-sixth in time trials and third in his heat race. In limited starts, Mitchell finished twenty-fifth in points with one Weld Racing Fast Time Award, one heat race victory, and two top-10 finishes.

Max Adams of Loomis won the night’s Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Driving the family owned #5X A.R.T. Speed Equipment / Motowear International ART, Adams qualified thirteenth, and ran seventh in the 30-lap feature. In limited appearances, Max ranked thirty-fourth in the point standings with two top-10 finishes.

After winning the Saldana Racing Products / Keizer Wheels Heat Race #3 and claiming sixth in the feature, Riverdale’s Landon Hurst earned “Rookie of the Year” honors. Piloting the family owned #179 Kings River Commodities / Duinkerken Farms Maxim, Hurst was ninth quick in time trials and ran seventh in the dash. Finishing ninth in points, Landon has two heat race victories, one BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, seven top-10 finishes, and 13 feature laps led.

D.J. Netto of Hanford won his second 6-lap Woodland Auto Display Dash of the campaign. Racing the family owned #88N Netto Ag. Inc. / Van De Pol Enterprises KB, Netto qualified third, placed fifth in his heat race, and scored twenty-first in the feature after an early exit. Ranking seventeenth in points, D.J. has one Weld Racing Fast Time Award, one heat race victory, five top-10 finishes, and 1 feature lap led in 2013.

Before clinching the season championship, Tipton’s “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. won the 10-lap Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main. Driving his #17V Johnston Calf Pens / DeBoer & Sons Trucking Spike, Faria was eighth quick in time trials, scored ninth in his heat race, and raced to eighth in the feature after starting sixteenth. To date, “Hollywood” has three feature wins, one Weld Racing Fast Time Award, nine heat race victories, four Woodland Auto Display Dash wins, one BR Motorsports / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, seventeen top-10 finishes, and 110 feature laps led on the year.
